Teen summer camps are a good idea both for teenagers and for adults. For teenagers, the advantages are obvious. A teen summer camp is an opportunity to get away from their parents for the summer. It allows them to go on all sorts of adventures, from wilderness trips to high-tech camps to foreign study abroad programs. For parents, however, a teenage summer camp is every bit as important. Parents need some time away from their teenagers, and going on a summer camp trip is just the thing. Depending on the camp, they can give the parents weeks or even months of freedom.

When picking out summer camps for teens, it is important to do some research. Not all teen summer camps are made equal. I know from experience. When I was a kid, I went to a teenage summer camp because one of my friends was going. On the surface, it looked like a lot of fun. It was out in the Canadian wilderness, and involved all of the classic outdoor activities. There was sailing, windsurfing, canoing, hiking, horseback riding – you get the picture. When I got there, however, it was not a lot of fun. Some of the counselors were bullies and the kids ran around pretty wildly. It was kind of a nasty place to be. People were just mean to each other and inconsiderate.

Nonetheless, most of my experiences with teen summer camps have been a lot more positive than that. I went to a summer day camp one year and absolutely loved it. We went hiking in trails around the area, did some arts and craft activities, and even did some community service projects. Although that might not sound like a lot of fun to some people, doing community service can actually be really neat. It can show you how you fit into the community – something really important for kids to learn.

One of the best ways to pick out teen summer camps is through the advice of friends and families. It is pretty hard to evaluate a summer camp for teens based solely on what you read in some guide. The guide might look like it is a lot of fun, but you never really know unless you talk to someone who has been there. That's why when I send my teens to summer camp, I'm going to send them to one that I already know is good. That way, they are guaranteed to have a blast.
